Are Used Golf Clubs Worth It? An Honest Answer

Why used is usually the smart buy

Golf equipment depreciates fast, and that's brilliant news if you're the second owner.

• The technology barely moves year to year. A driver from three seasons ago is, for almost every golfer, indistinguishable from this year's model in actual performance.
• The price drop is steep. A club can lose a big chunk of its value in the first year or two while playing exactly the same.
• You can afford better. The budget that buys a new mid-range iron set often buys a used premium set in great condition. You play better gear for the same money.

For most Malaysian golfers — beginners finding their feet and improvers who don't want to overpay — used is simply better value.

Where buying used pays off most

• Irons. Big savings, and a good set lasts years. Just check the grooves.
• Drivers and woods. Last season's flagship for a fraction of new. Check the face for cracks.
• Putters. They barely wear out. A used putter is often as good as new.
• Full sets for beginners. The cheapest way to get properly equipped without guessing what you'll like.

Where new sometimes wins

We'd rather tell you straight:

• Wedges you'll use hard. Grooves wear with heavy use, and fresh grooves grip better around the greens. A worn wedge is a false economy.
• A very specific custom fit. If you've been fitted for an unusual shaft, length or lie, matching it used can take patience.
• Gloves and grips. Consumables — buy those fresh.

The one thing that decides it: where you buy

A used club is only worth it if it's genuine and the condition is what you were told. That's the entire risk, and it's why the "worth it" question really comes down to who you buy from.
