The Best Used Golf Clubs for Beginners in Malaysia
Starting golf is expensive enough without buying the wrong gear. The good news is you don't need a full 14-club bag or the newest models to enjoy the game and improve. Buy a few forgiving clubs used, and you'll play better and spend far less. Here's how to build a beginner set that makes sense.
You don't need 14 clubs yet
When you're learning, a handful of clubs you can actually hit beats a full set you can't. A great starter bag looks like this:
- A driver (or just a fairway wood off the tee to start — easier to hit).
- A fairway wood or hybrid for long shots.
- A few irons — a 7, 9 and a pitching wedge cover most of what a beginner needs.
- A putter.
That's five or six clubs. Add to it as your game grows.
What to look for in each
Driver: Go for forgiveness, not distance claims. A larger head and higher loft (10.5° or more) gets the ball up and straighter while you're learning.
Hybrids over long irons: Long irons (3, 4, 5) are hard for anyone to hit. Hybrids do the same job and are far more forgiving — most beginners find them a revelation.
Irons: Look for "game improvement" irons — chunkier heads with a wide sole and perimeter weighting. They're built to help off-centre strikes, which, let's be honest, is most beginner strikes.
Putter: Whatever feels comfortable and rolls the ball straight. This is where used shines — putters barely wear, so a second-hand one is as good as new.
Steel or graphite shafts?
Graphite is lighter and easier to swing fast, which suits many beginners and most ladies' sets. Steel is heavier, cheaper and very durable. Neither is wrong — swing both if you can and go with what feels smoother.
Why used is the beginner's best friend
You genuinely don't know yet what you'll love or how far your game will go. Spending big on new clubs before you know your swing is a gamble. A quality used set lets you:
- Get properly equipped for a lot less.
- Try the game without a painful upfront cost.
- Upgrade or trade in later once you know what suits you — and put the value of these clubs straight towards the next set.
